Hero

Hero is the only child of John da Costa, a former black slave from the West Indies. Her white mother, who died giving birth, was the daughter of a Jewish merchant who owns a pub. Set in the early 19th century, this novel has an appealing heroine who is over six feet tall and given to fighting back.
