A Visual Language: Elements of Design

Author(s): David Cohen & Scott Anderson

Art and Music - children

This is a practical approach to the theory of visual language, taking the basics of line, shape, tone, colour, texture, form, scale, space and light and discussing how to use them. The first half of the book talks about how artists can use these elements to create their own visual language and how this can be applied to develop their own work. This text is illustrated with the ceramic work of David Cohen.
The second half of the book is divided into sections, each written by a prominent crafts person, expounding on how they have developed and used their own visual language. These craftspeople are: Alison Kinnaird (glass engraver), Jack Cunningham (jeweller), John Creed (metalworker), Malcolm Appleby (silversmith) and Anna King (weaver). First published 2006.
